Slowly his eyes opened to see a thicket of shrubs and small trees with spindly branches. The morning sun threw flickering rays of light through the dense foliage. The air was alive with thousands of tiny reflective fragments of moisture and dust. He lay on a bed of soft undulating sand.
Suddenly alarmed by the waking realization that his surroundings were far from normal, he sat up.
'What's going on?' He said aloud but in a hushed voice.
In a swift movement, he stood and took a few paces towards a gap in the thicket. Peering through revealed an endless landscape. He was deep within a massive expanse of veld with a ring of mountains far in the distance. There seemed to be a vaguely audible rumble of the sea nearby, but he couldn’t be certain. He stood in his underpants with no sign of anyone, or any civilization, in sight. No buildings, roads, houses ...
